RE: Suburban 454 Vortec or 454 pre Vortec?

TOWMASTER CHIP Chevy Truck 454 7.4 7.4L TBI 94,95
I have not yet ordered mine from Brian but do plan to this summer. Others on the forum speak highly of Brian's chips. In emails with Brian I have found he knows his 454's and owns a 454 truck. He estimates about 10% increase in torque and HP and still runs on regular gas so you may want to email him for more info.
By the way that looks like a nice TV you got.
Thanks for the info...I will contact Brian, that is some cheap hp/tq upgrade. Even if minimal gains, still probably worth it.

RE: Suburban 454 Vortec or 454 pre Vortec?

Thanks for the advice folks.....I wanted a Vortec, but found a good deal on a '94.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v654/Roadhouse66/IM000021.jpg
Its from California so its rust free, compared to anything newer found in MI. Got it for $5k, and have my '99 up for sale right now for $6k. So hopefully come out of this deal okay.
I need new rims for it, looking for '01 and newer GM 8lug chrome wheels. Also plan on installing a dual Flowmaster exhaust.
Owner took his Prodigy brake control, but left the mounting bracket and wiring hardware. So I need to pick one up off ebay and plug it in.
My '99 is far more loaded on the interior, but oh well, this 3/4 ton will handle the weight of the trailer better.

RE: Jeep GC Rear End Problems???

If it has the D44a rear axle they have had problems with them since '96. Carrier bearing problems. The D35 was a weaker axle, but now bearing problems.

RE: Big suprise 2nd time out with new TT

Mine tows not different with water tank full or empty. But mine is just in front of the axles, so basically center of the trailer.

RE: TOWING WITH MY 2500 SUBURBAN

Yes a 8.1L would be better, but you wont find it in a new Suburban. I doubt this gentleman wants to get rid of his new 2008 'Burban for a used '06 or older.
The OP has a 2006 Burb not an 08. I quoted the OP below
"PLAN ON PULLING IT WITH MY 2006 CHEVY SUBURBAN 2500 LT"
My bad, his camper is an '08....I somehow mixed up the years reading. I should read slower.

RE: TOWING WITH MY 2500 SUBURBAN

He has the autoride....doesn't that already have factory Airbags in the rear? If it works like the air suspension did in my old Expedition it will fill the airbags manually to raise the rear of the truck up hooked to a heavy trailer. So in otherwords no need for aftermarket air bags.

RE: Advice

Congrats....8100 are great engines. I just wish the Alison was available behind them in the 'Burban/YukonXL. We have to pickups at work with the 8100/Alison combo great for towing...just thirsty.

RE: Suburban 454 Vortec or 454 pre Vortec?

The 8.1 is the way to go if you want to move some weight without going diesel.
2001 Chevrolet Suburban AUTORIDE 8.1
That is a heck of a price for a 8100 Suburban. I can't find one around here for less than $15k. I'm trying to find something for $8k or less. I have found some V10 X's for $11k...but that is more than I want to spend.

RE: Suburban 454 Vortec or 454 pre Vortec?

I've driven both...first, are you sure you want a <10MPG 454 at $3.25+/gallon? You can get a 2500 with a 350.
The Vortec has more power, and is much freer-revving than the TBI engine. Also, the 1995 was the last year for the old interior design, with the squared-off dash, spinning-disc gauges (actually kinda cool), & no airbags. However, I wouldn't hesitate to get a TBI engine if the truck was in good condition. Either will tow very well.
Thanks for the advice guys, I'll try to stick to a Vortec 454ci. Exhaust and K&N system is something I would to do right away. I don't mind the gas mileage...my 1500 Suburban only gets 13 empty and 7-8 towing my camper. But it struggles to tow my camper. If I'm going to do a switch I will get a bigger motor.
My camper weights about 7500-8000lbs loaded...way more than my 1/2 ton should be towing. It tows it and has for a year, I just take it easy and never take the highway on trips. Most of our camping trips have been within' 50 miles of home. I want venture farther away, but not with my current 1500 and 350ci. A 2500 w/350 has a towing rating of 7500lbs. A 2500 w/454 has a 10,000lb tow rating. So I would like the bigger motor.
Actually '94 was the last year of the squared off interiors.
I rather buy a X w/V10, or Suburban w/8100...but those are a few to several grand more than I can find 454ci Suburbans, and out of my price range for right now.
Again thanks for the help.

RE: Can't wait to go camping!!!

We are hoping to make it out before the end of the month. I have the camper home from storage..but need a nice day to de winterize it and clean it out. I want to take all the bedding to a laundry mat and wash it. Restock the cupboards and we will be ready.

RE: has anyone ever heard of this?

maybe a troll???
"Trolling is the act of purposefully antagonizing other people on the internet, generally on message boards. When done in a moderated internet community, this can result in banning."
"To use the internet to start problems, insult, or hurt others. An action that only usually affects the person trolling."
Trolling is pretty common on most message boards, I see it alot on some of the 4x4 forums I frequent.

Suburban 454 Vortec or 454 pre Vortec?

I need a bigger more powerful TV..but am trying to spend little money. I currently have '99 1500 Suburban w/Vortec 5.7L and 3.73 gears.
I want to get rid of it for a 3/4ton Suburban w/454 and 4.10 gears...'99 or older. That way it wont be worth much more than I can get for my Suburban. Or might be of the same value.
I prefer the Vortec version for the more power 290hp 410ft lbs. Would a pre Vortec 454 230hp 385ft lbs. be much of difference in towing than my 350ci 250hp 335ft lbs 'Burban? I know the '92-95 3/4ton chassis is better off towing but the motor has less hp than my motor, and not much more torque.
So If I find a good deal on a '92-95 should I get it or just hold out and pick up a '96-99?
Thanks for any advice. I know a couple people who have owned both version of these Suburbans and both said they towed like a dream. But both only towed a Jeep on a car hauler which weighs less than my TT.

RE: Unit dry weight or curb weight?

The weight in the catalog/brochure and inside my cabinet door are only about a 100lbs different. It was the weight inside the door that the dealer told me included a full fresh water tank, and full propane. Thanks for the help.

Unit dry weight or curb weight?

Not sure if this is true, so hopefully you guys can answer it.
I always thought the unit dry weight listed for a camper was completely empty and dry. The place we bought our TT from said the listed weight for dry units actually includes your propane tanks full and fresh water tank full......is this true? So my camper has an advertised dry weight of 68XXlbs. So with the fresh water tank empty and propane tanks empty it would truly weigh 64XXlbs.
I've also heard the advertised curb weight of a TV is with the gas tank full....is this true?
TIA

RE: interco tires

I run Interco's on my Jeep, and know many people who do. But I haven't talked to anyone who has ran their trailer tires. I think they are fairly new.
I do know all of their offroad tires are made at many different locations. Some overseas, some in the US.
sorry I wasn't much help.

RE: River flooding advice please!

Shannon did not say what the settlement is for the trailer. She said if they want to buy it back from the insurance company it is $1,300.
Thanks, I misread her post....I thought the insurance company was only only going to pay them $1300 for the loss. That would suck if you owed way more than that on it....if anything is owed.
If they pay it off and you aren't out any money, I would let the camper go, and buy a new/newer one.

RE: A new way to camp for us this year

We just bought or TT last spring, but I wanted to go seasonal from the start. Still do. My wife doesn't tho', she wants to camp at different places.
If I could of talked her into going seasonal we would of bought a 38' camper seeing how we wouldn't need to tow it places.
We did do a three month seasonal last fall after labor day. Campgrounds are slow around here and run deals for the fall deer/bird hunting season. Only cost $50 a month for us to leave the camper on site, and then the normal campground fee of $18 each night we stayed. We'll be doing it again this fall, can't wait.

RE: Tongue Weight

His problem is most likely the 2 door explorer. thats a short wheelbase for towing a 25' camper. It could be other things also....but I sure wouldn't want to tow with that setup.
